In a Referendum, Sweden Resoundingly Reject the Euro

Categories: Crazy.

Jun 10, 2018 // By:Gary // 66 comments

In a significant setback for a more unified Europe, Swedes voted overwhelmingly today to reject membership in the European single currency after a passionate referendum campaign, made uncertain to the last moment by the assassination of Foreign Minister Anna Lindh.

The margin of victory for those opposed to adoption of the single currency, the euro, far exceeded the expectations of many people here. It provided a stunning defeat for Prime Minister Goran Persson, who had called the referendum in the belief that most Swedes would agree to abandon their currency, the krona.

Political experts said the impact would be felt across Europe, countering efforts to strengthen the 15-nation European Union before its planned expansion with 10 new members next year. Apart from Sweden, two union members, Denmark and Britain, are outside the 12-country euro-zone stretching from the Arctic Circle to the Mediterranean.

  1. Yes we did say no to the euro.
A majority of the Swedish population was against the euro, Also the EU but our Goverment voted us in anyway..
But this referendum was in the year of 2003…. so quite late news there…

Do not accept that Mickey Mouse money in which you would have given up Swedish sovereignty and identity.

      • It’s not just changing the name it affects the whole structure of the country…. here in the UK we soon realised that after the entry into the EU we were paying twice as much for everything we bought and as time went on things got a lot worse as the EU tightened its grip

  7. I believe that this is a very clear message to the (in my view incapable) politicians of the European community. More and more it seems they are just there out of self interest and the interest of big companies. Apparently they consider the majority of the European inhabitants as a minority that can be ignored. except if you have to vote. With beautiful empty promises, as every politician does.
Priority is given to the multinationals, big deals and laws and the big money. I consider Sweden as a very social country and I think that I understand that beside the economic fears there is a lot of danger of deterioration of social connectedness and solidarity. It appears that the community is wasting lots of money and not really a community as the big members rule the mainstream. I see the EEC just as a big Company. Not a real responsible collaboration. Of course this is my personal perception of this European community.

    • I’ll answer your comment as it is the most elaborated, but I could equally answer any other. I’m utterly shocked by the general tone, which comes to “Europe is to blame for everything which goes wrong, and everything would be amazing without Europe”.
How to start? I know you’re not alone in that view, but it’s wrong in so many counts.
Politicians do what they do, which is to over promise and underdeliver, and seek scapegoats elsewhere. In many places, particularly Britain, whenever anything went wrong, it was blamed in “Europe is forcing us” (ditto with Greece, Italy, and to a lesser extent, Ireland, Spain, Portugal). Never was it acknowledged how many times belonging to Europe was favourable, nor listed all the advantages.
You all are very wrong in believing that not joining the euro or abandoning the EU will result in a magic return to an idealized past (which was never as pretty as those idealized dreams depict).
The EU as it is now has flaws. But it’s much better than the alternative, which is back to each mind their own business. Instead of so much bitching and daydreaming (and lying and wilfully avoiding the obvious), let’s us all work to improve the EU

    • The EU is most certainly not Communist in any way. Although I admit it is a semi dictatorship, the truth is that it is a federal and economic trading block for Capitalism and pursues neo liberal poIicies that are in the interests of big business. Greece is a classic example of this. They had a government who were elected on an anti austerity agenda but were forced by the European union and the IMF to make devastating cuts to public services which has destroyed the economic infrastructure of their society. Thanks for your opinion on this issue.

    • I agree, the EU is implementing the Coudonhove Kalergi Plan, it’s intent is to destroy national pride, patriotism, national identity, national independence, free speech, and to make the richer countries poor by paying for the poor countries, thereby destroying incentives for individuals or nations to excel, by 2030 they want to have Europe inextricably bound together by law and handed over to the UN World Government with all countries sovereignty relinquished to the UN enslaving the world population to the rich minority (the cabal). The sudden massive influx of so called refugees where young men are over represented is not a coincidence, it is part of the plan to drain money from countries and therefore individuals to take away any independences, to criticise the immigration numbers and crime waves attracts false names like ‘racist’ and ‘islamophobe’ , worldwide distractions are being thrown at ordinary citizens to keep everyone from seeing the truth. Once the ‘plan’ is complete it will be too late for any of us to change it without massive numbers of deaths as police forces are ordered to shoot those who wish to reclaim their freedoms, but that won’t bother the cabal at all, they think there too many people on the planet anyway, with automation they don’t need as many of us to keep the wheels of industry turning and keeping them rich, less wages to pay anyway, less welfare, they have all they’ll ever need, we are cash cows to them and that is all.

  24. I’ve had rental-car deals with many rental car corporations, however they are not so effective as Budget ! The values astonish! The autos are excellent! You always have the precise model of the car you hired or better. All you need to do is just pick the vehicle up and head to your desired spots. No extended queues with inhospitable agents as well as no troubles with dropping off. That’s why, in Paris I chose this rental-car agency for my fantastic holiday getaway. Everything was simple. I highly recommend to rent right from Budget while you’re in France!

Obviously not everybody is convinced by the need for a European Master Currency, That is the problem with democracy; perhaps Europe needs to abandon democracy to become a leadership state, as it was the last time Germany united and led it. Else/and a firmer propaganda campaign is needed. do not forget the millions of Nazis & Facists who gave their lives to unite Europe, last time round!

The EU has no concern for its masses it is run by conglomerates with powerful lobbyist companies surrounding Brussels. These companies put forward the EU agenda all that changes is the name and address at the top of the document. Well done Sweden its taken a long time but countries are starting to realize what a bad idea the EU is In 1973 Britain was still one of the biggest industrial nations in the world. Post EU membership one of the largest companies in the world ICI GONE the British car industry GONE Rolls Royce Cars GONE Bentley GONE. Ship Building GONE. Most of our heavy industry now has a German name. For God sake Roll Royce has a BMW engine. Need I say more, the EU will chew your country up and spit out a euro yes machine no longer a sovereign nation. Bite the bullet and do the same as the UK GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN.

If EU manages to resist for next 10 years, the countries left apart of it will be chewed by Chinese, European and United States economies.

  41. While everyone is bitching about the EU and the euro, no-one seems to be aware of how unimportant it all is. If human beings carry on the way they are going now, over populating and polluting the only planet they have to live on, in 100 years time NO-ONE will have enough to eat and the planet will be barren. This is the future we are preparing for our children. This is REALITY! The evidence is already there, it is already happening. Can we all stop bitching about getting on with each other and try working together to ensure our children and grandchildren have a future. The UK in particular should stop moaning. They invaded many countries in the past, forcing them into British political and educational systems, preaching their religious beliefs and riding roughshod over the citizens of other countries in order to control and rape those countries of their assets and their identity. Colonialism was shameful and modern education seems finally to teaching us the facts. If one country does that to others then they can expect to pay the price at some time, so complaining about immigrants and the euro is pure self indulgance. The past should stay firmly where it belongs, in its shameful and disgraceful state of PAST, and we should concentrate on ensuring there is a future for the children we have put on this planet and who deserve the consideration of the selfish, arrogant fools who can see no further than beyond the unimportance of maintaining national identities, no matter what cost to humankinds future!
